Finding the Promised Land

I’ve been reading the book of Exodus and got to the part where God led His people out of Egypt. He knew they needed visuals to help them stay focused on getting to the place He wanted them to be. It was a good place where they would have good things. They had a pillar of clouds by day and the fire by night to guide them there. Sometimes I wish I had something that clearcut to look for and to travel toward. Paul, too, talked about keeping his eyes on the prize. He knew that it’s all too easy for us to get off on rabbit trails and lose focus on the things God wants us to accomplish. Today in American churches we hear a lot about “vision.” It means what we think we’re heading toward– what we want to achieve. Without it we just fritter away our time and mostly serve ourselves. As I read about the pillar of clouds by day and the fire by night I felt my heart leap a little bit. God knows what we need to feel energized and focused and healthy.  We need concrete goals. What are the visuals I can keep cemented in my mind as I live each day? What goals am I striving to achieve? Without them I’ll just wander around in the wilderness and feel all alone and unfulfilled. I don’t know about you, but I want to be certain I’m heading in the right direction toward the promised land.
